Stinking Thinking

 • Series: Toxic

Detox – Toxic Thinking – Stinking Thinking Most of the war that we are fighting with the devil and even with ourselves is happening right between our two ears - in the 8 pounds that sits on top of our neck. Our brains can be infected with toxic thoughts and toxic thinking. Your thinking will determine who you will become. Romans 12:1 I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. God’s process is to transform us by changing the way that we think; the engine of your life is thinking. Thinking pulls the car of emotions. Emotions pulls the car of behavior. Behavior pulls the car of consequences. Wrong thinking leads to wrong emotions leads to unwise behavior which leads to devastating consequences. But right thinking leads to positive emotions which leads to wise behavior which leads to fruitful consequences. Let me just say that there is five kinds of thoughts that we are going to have to really go to battle against. Here they are… 1. Negative thoughts. 2. Fearful thoughts. 3. Critical thoughts. 4. Discontented thoughts. 5. Condemning thoughts. So today is the day that we go to war against these toxic thoughts. 2 Cor. 10:4 For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. 5 We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ, 6 being ready to punish every disobedience, when your obedience is complete. Paul is using warlike language when he says that he is going after every thought and all the ways that we think that are not in obedience to Jesus. - Every thought that is not godlike. - Every thought that is not built on the solid rock of his word. - Every thought that diminishes Jesus. - Every thought in us that is arguing against God right now. - Every opinion and thought that we smugly embrace that defies God. - Every kind of thinking doesn’t align with God. - All the thinking that we do that says, “just a little disobedience or sin isn’t bad.” - All the kind of thinking that we have internalized that we refuse to give up – “this is just the way I am, God made me this way, I can never be any other way, they said I would never amount to anything – that I would be trash…” - Even all the thinking that reflects the bankrupt philosophies of this world like “I can do whatever I want as long as it doesn’t hurt someone else” or, “I have my truth and you have your truth” or, “all paths lead to heaven” or the atheistic evolutionary philosophies that say that were all just mistakes and nothing means anything anyway. When we take our thoughts captive – We will believe what Jesus believed about life, about ourselves about others and about God. We will think like Jesus thought. We will do what Jesus did. That leads us to how God does transform us. Romans 12:2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. God works through transformation. Transformation is an inner working. God reveals truth. He brings light. He gives a new word. He introduces you to a new vision. He gives you new thoughts. He gives you a new platform to stand on. Psalm 19:7 The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple; 8 the precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes; 9 the fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; the rules of the Lord are true, and righteous altogether. 10 More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb. 11 Moreover, by them is your servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward. 12 Who can discern his errors? Declare me innocent from hidden faults. Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. The renovation of our thinking revolves around a living, an active, a supernatural, a penetrating, a reviving, a revealing word from God that introduces us to something so new and so radical that we can hardly believe it. Pursue great thinking in your life in these four categories. 1. Think great thoughts about God. 2. Think great thoughts about yourself as a Jesus follower. 3. Think great thoughts about others. 4. Think great thoughts about life.
