Questions: Why Call Me Lord?

 • Series: Questions Jesus Asked

Luke 6:46 “Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you? 47 Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like: 48 he is like a man building a house, who dug deep Scott when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built. 49 But the one who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the stream broke against it, immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great.” What an amazing question. “Why do you call me Lord, Lord? and then ignore me?” The word Lord means; Master. A Lord would exercise absolute ownership rights. This is why some of you ever have any new revelation or God as stopped speaking to you - because every time he gives you new information you debate whether you should do it or. He simply waiting for you to do what is already told you to do. Why do you call me, Lord, Lord and not do what I tell you? That can almost sound narcissistic and demanding. Does he want to establish a relationship based on fear? What would it take for me or for you to have a relationship with Jesus where we had abandoned everything else for him? What would it take for you to cast aside everything else that you’re looking to for meaning in order to gain Jesus? Jesus is not forcing himself upon us. But something has captured the heart of billions of Jesus followers. John 1:14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. 16 For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. 17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father's side, he has made him known. When the disciples abandoned all to follow Jesus it was because they saw the beauty of Jesus. They saw his glory. There was no one like him. There was never anything like Him. With Jesus… There is always something new to behold. There is something new to enjoy. His beauty keeps increasing. We marvel at him in new ways all the time. He just keeps getting bigger, and better, and greater and more glorious. Here’s what Paul said about the beauty of Jesus… Philippians 3:8 Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. But here’s my challenge; how can someone who is so beautiful, so gracious, so faithful - how could or why would he ever utter a word that would do you harm, or lead you wrongly, or cause you to think that he didn’t have your best in mind? Luke 6:46 “Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you? 47 Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like: 48 he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built. 49 But the one who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the stream broke against it, immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great.” Somehow the very life of Jesus is embedded in his words. His words are actually supernatural. To lay hold of them and to believe them and to practice them invites heavenly activity to take place. When you believe his word something Is activated from heaven to you. Back to the Scripture. Jesus is painting a picture of what the person is like who not only hears his words but does them. 1. … he is like a man building a house… 2. … who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock… And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built. Because life is going to break against your house. Joshua 1:8 This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. Psalm 119:89 Forever, O Lord, your word is firmly fixed in the heavens. Jesus finishes his illustration. Luke 6:49 But the one who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the stream broke against it, immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great.”
