Who Do You Say That I Am?

 • Series: Questions Jesus Asked

Matthew 16:13 When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” 14 “Well,” they replied, “some say John the Baptist, some say Elijah, and others say Jeremiah or one of the other prophets.” 15 Then he asked them, “But who do you say I am?” 16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” 17 Jesus replied, “You are blessed, Simon son of John, because my Father in heaven has revealed this to you. You did not learn this from any human being. 18 Now I say to you that you are Peter (which means ‘rock’), and upon this rock I will build my church, and all the powers of hell will not conquer it. With Today we began a series where we will examine several of the questions Jesus asked. And this is probably the most important one. Matthew 16:13 When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” 14 “Well,” they replied, “some say John the Baptist, some say Elijah, and others say Jeremiah or one of the other prophets.” Jesus asks what the polls are saying about his identity. But Jesus presses in just a little bit more… Matthew 16:15 Then he asked them, “But who do you say I am?” And that is the question. This is personal. Jesus is defining the relationship. “Who do you say I am?” Not, “what is everybody else saying, but who do you say?” One of Satan’s full-time jobs is to keep you confused about this question. Matthew 16:15 Then he asked them, “But who do you say I am?” 16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” Who do you say I am? Peter blurts out… - You are the Messiah - you are the Christ - you are the anointed one - you are the son of the living God Matthew 16:17 Jesus replied, “You are blessed, Simon son of John, because my Father in heaven has revealed this to you. You did not learn this from any human being. Blessed are you Peter. You got it. You get it. It got you. And now you’re blessed. You’re favored. Your soul is satisfied. Jesus says that Peter came into this information about who Jesus is from God himself and not from any human being. Paul would write about this in Ephesians 1:16 I do not cease to give thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers, 17 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him, 18 having the eyes of your hearts enlightened… It is the spirit of revelation which gives you knowledge of Jesus. Matthew 16:15 Then he asked them, “But who do you say I am?” 16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” 17 Jesus replied, “You are blessed, Simon son of John, because my Father in heaven has revealed this to you. You did not learn this from any human being. 18 Now I say to you that you are Peter PETROS (which means ‘rock’), and upon this rock PETRA I will build my church, and all the powers of hell will not conquer it. Jesus says that he is going to build a church. It will be his church. The church is not to be built upon Peter – Petros. The church will be built upon the rock of revelation of who Jesus is. Who do you say that I am? This answer will determine everything.
